Let’s golf clap for NASCAR, and then get rid of all the flags
Sorry, but my heart didn’t leap when NASCAR decided to ban the Confederate flag. (I’m not really sorry.)
I mean, I’m happy it happened. It’s the right move. Kudos. Huzzah! But no, I didn’t blot tears with a tissue when I saw the news.
It’s likely because I have no emotional attachment to NASCAR, or any sport for that matter.
But, I do understand the significance. A major sports franchise that White people adore decides there’s no more room for racism. It confesses the Confederate flag is a relic extolling America’s violent, racist past and says it won’t sanction its display any more.
That’s huge. It’s a relief to know that when I don’t go to a NASCAR event and don’t watch one on TV and completely ignore everything NASCAR-related like I’ve always done, the southern cross won’t scorch my retina. Racism is solved!
(SN: I realize now I will never get a job at NASCAR.)
You may be thinking: “Whoa, Jonathan. Sarcasm, much? Think of the progress. NASCAR means a lot to a lot of people, and they’re getting heat for this incredibly courageous decision. This is a big deal. So many people love NASCAR!”
Mmhmm. You’re right. So many White people love NASCAR.
